Chicken Soup for the Soul by Jack Canfield

?REVIEW #500!

one fine summer day, young mark monday - aged 4 or 5 - was tooling around the neighborhood on his Big Wheel. he was a happy lad and liked to make others around him feel happy too. this outlook soon saw its first challenge when he wheeled up to his friend Tommy - who looked miserable and had clearly been crying.

Whats the matter, Tommy?

Dads going away!

young mark monday was a military brat and so was Tommy, so mark knew exactly how he felt. he had felt the same way, many times. but he hated seeing his friend Tommy looking so upset. he thought for a moment, and as his thoughts tended to do, they moved towards his favorite shows, Sesame Street and Electric Company. what happened when kids had problems on those shows, problems that they didnt know how to solve? why, they sang about them! and then the problems just didnt seem so big anymore. and so young mark sang.

Dont be sa-ad, Tommy!
Just be gla-ad, Tommy!
The sun is bright,
Let your heart take --

mark was silenced when Tommy suddenly picked up a rock and smashed it right into his face. then Tommy ran off. mark sat there stunned... then slowly rode his Big Wheel home, crying and bleeding. from that day on, he knew the dangers of trying to turn a frown upside down.

The year's at the spring And day's at the morn; Morning's at seven; The hillside's dew-pearled; The lark's on the wing; The snail's on the thorn; God's in His heaven - All's right with the world! The Miracle of Spring "In the spring, at the end of the day, you should smell like dirt. The reason for some confusion over whether it is the 20th or 21st of March is because it can happen on either day and it also depends on where you happen to live upon planet earth. Naval Observatory. Although Spring is officially here, we have yet to see very many days of mild weather that we can really get out and do something in our gardens and yards.

Little do you know that we flowers have our own identities and souls, for indeed we do, along with divine purpose and goals, albeit our goals are much simpler than yours? For instance, my goal in this new incarnation is to feel the Joy of Spring! To you this may seem frivolous, but to me, it is everything. It is all I know, all I yearn for, and all that I live for. You see, for me, it all began with a seed, and this seed was watered and nurtured by the sun and the earth, so that I may come and experience my Joy of Spring. This is all I want, this is all I will be, and this is simply perfect and divine, at least for me. The sun and the earth know who and what I am.

When I was a very little girl, my father's family would all gather at my great-grandmother's house for Sunday dinner after church every week. She lived down a mile-long dirt lane surrounded by acres of land and after dessert, I loved nothing more than to go for a walk and explore with my daddy. In the spring, whenever the fields at Grandma Sally's would fill with golden sprigs, he would pick one and ask 'Do you like butter? Let's check to see'' and as the flower cast a yellow glow onto my chin, he would pronounce once again that yes, I liked butter. I would eagerly snatch it from his hand and after doing the same, confidently announce that he liked butter, too. Even with the 'butter' association, I somehow got it into my head that these flowers were called 'petercups' instead of buttercups. He seemed to find this hilarious and quite charming so long after I knew their proper name, I would chirp 'Petercups!

Darkness fades Day arrives Spring has begun. Birds chirping Flowers of color Butterflies dancing

I smiled when I saw the first flower of Spring the other day. A lone Blue Bonnet had popped its head through the ground and was looking around on a cool, April morning. I wasn't sure what had made it finally decide to end its long, Winter's sleep. Perhaps it had noticed that the ground around it was no longer frozen. Perhaps it had felt the warmth of the sunshine finally pushing the temperatures into the seventies. Perhaps it had heard the songs of the birds singing that Spring had arrived and it was time for the world to awaken again.
