Lost on a Mountain in Maine

An enthusiastic tomboy with a propensity for climbing trees and building forts, I was completely dazzled by this wilderness escape. At the end of the week I wanted to steal a canoe, row over to the other side of the lake, and live off the land for the rest of my life. Instead I went home and proceeded to obsessively read wilderness survival novels. With The Kings of Summer in theaters, I was reminded of my lingering affinity for classic tales of survival and self-reliance. These are a few of my childhood favorites.

We had so many crazy adventures as kids The summer adventures of two families of children who sail, camp, fish, and pirate together in the Lake District of England. Inspired by the stories of Robinson Crusoe and Treasure Island, the kids make an enemy out of their uncle James Turner, nicknaming him Captain Flint and conspiring against him to teach him a lesson about ignoring his nieces. Robinson Crusoe meets the Babysitter's Club: year-old Mary Wallace and her year-old sister Jean are on an ocean liner on its way to Australia. Their love of babysitting leads them to caring for the adorable children of two families on board. Then the ocean liner wrecks! They make a home on the island for themselves and the little ones.
